6 Waldron High School Students to Attend Leadership Forum in Washington D.C.
During the week of February 7-12, twelve Scott County Health and Education Coalition (SCHEC) members will be traveling to Washington D.C. for the CADCA National Leadership Forum at the Gaylord National Hotel and Resort.
Six of the members traveling are part of Bulldogs Against Destructive Decisions (BADD) at Waldron High School. BADD serves as the youth subcommittee for SCHEC. Students attending are Brandon Freeman, Eric Vongphakdy, Rachel Tisher, Karla Mendez, Dylan Madden, and James Bates.
The members will be attending the Summit for Youth Leaders Workshops. During the workshops the students and adults will be learning how to be leaders in their school and community as well as learning about alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention.
During the week in D.C., the students will hear from a number of speakers including CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Vice President Joseph Biden. The students will also meet with their Congressmen, Mike Ross, Blanche Lincoln, and Mark Pryor on Wednesday, February 10.
They will be sharing with the Congressmen about SCHEC and their role towards reducing underage drinking in Scott County.
The student will also have the opportunity to sightsee during the week. Planned stops include the Capitol, Lincoln Memorial, and Arlington Cemetery to name a few. Stay updated on the student's workshops and sightseeing at www.scottcountycoalition.com and SCHEC's Facebook fan page. Pictures will be posted daily!
The trip to Washington DC is funded by the SPF SIG through the Arkansas Department of Human Services and SAMSHA. Contact Melissa Gasaway at 207-4177 or mkgasaway@hotmail.com for more information about SCHEC's efforts.
